To get your Shopify store recommended in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, you mostly need what good SEO already asks for: pages Google can index, accurate product data, a clean Merchant Center feed and content that answers buyers' questions. For UK brands the order matters. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are live here now. ChatGPT's shopping results and Shopify's AI channels are, for now, built around US shoppers. Here is what to do and in what order.

Getting your Shopify store into ChatGPT and AI Overviews

Start with Google: AI Overviews and AI Mode

Start with Google, because its AI features are already live for UK shoppers. AI Overviews have been live in the UK since August 2024. AI Mode, the conversational version, started rolling out here in July 2025. Google's guidance is plain. There are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special optimisations needed. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google also says there is no special structured data you need to add for AI features. For a Shopify store that means the basics have to be right. Shopify generates your sitemap, canonical tags and robots.txt automatically, and its themes include product schema markup. Check Search Console for products and collections that are not indexed, fix duplicate or empty titles and meta descriptions, and make sure collection pages have real text explaining what is in them and who it is for. Collection pages are often the weakest part of a Shopify store for search. A grid of products with a one-line heading gives Google, and an AI answer, nothing to quote. A short introduction that explains the range, how to choose between products and who each one suits gives both something to work with, and usually helps conversion as well.

Get your product data right, everywhere

AI shopping answers are built from product data, so the same product needs to look the same everywhere. On your store, Google supports two types of product structured data: product snippets and merchant listings. Merchant listings, for pages where the product can be bought, require a name, image and offer. Google says providing both structured data on your pages and a Merchant Center feed maximises your eligibility. In Merchant Center, free listings can show your products at no cost on Google Search, the Shopping tab, Images, Lens, YouTube, Maps and Gemini. Connect your catalogue through Shopify's Google & YouTube channel or your feed tool, then check for disapprovals and warnings every week. Above all, keep price and stock consistent. A product that is £40 on the page, £45 in the feed and out of stock in reality is the kind of record that gets dropped.

ChatGPT: what is live, and where

OpenAI says ChatGPT's product results are chosen independently, are not ads and are ranked on factors including availability, price and quality. Shopify product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and OpenAI says no extra work is needed from individual Shopify merchants. There is a catch for UK brands. OpenAI's merchant page says shopping is currently live in the US and will expand to other regions over time. Shopify's ChatGPT channel is part of its Agentic Storefronts, which also cover Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify's help centre says the store must sell to customers in the United States, although it can be based outside the US. The channel is switched on by default for eligible stores, and Shopify charges no fee for sales that start in ChatGPT. None of this affects how ChatGPT ranks products, which OpenAI says is not paid for. It only decides whether your catalogue is available to be shown at all. So if you ship to the US, check Sales channels in your Shopify admin and make sure your catalogue is clean. If you only sell in the UK, focus on Google for now and be ready for when ChatGPT shopping reaches the UK. ChatGPT search more broadly does work here. Make sure your robots.txt does not block OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, which OpenAI says is what surfaces websites in ChatGPT search. Editing robots.txt on Shopify means adding a robots.txt.liquid template, and Shopify warns that a mistake can cost you all your traffic, so test it.

Write the pages answer engines quote

AI answers lean on pages that answer a question directly. For most stores that means three types of content. Buying guides and comparisons. Which size, which material, which version, and how your range compares with the obvious alternatives. Put the answer in the first paragraph. Proper FAQs on product and collection pages, based on what customers actually ask your service team, not filler. Clear facts on product pages: dimensions, ingredients, materials, care, compatibility, delivery and returns, in text rather than only in images. Reviews on your own store, shown in text on the product page. They give answer engines real customer language about fit, quality and results, and they answer the questions shoppers ask before buying. Then track it. ChatGPT referrals arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com, so set up a channel for them in analytics. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, in public preview, that shows citations in Copilot. An AI visibility tool can tell you which prompts mention your brand and which mention a competitor instead.

There is no shortcut into AI answers. There is a store with clean data and clear answers, and a store without.

Questions Shopify brands ask about AI search

Can UK shoppers buy my products in ChatGPT?

Not yet, according to OpenAI. Its merchant page says ChatGPT shopping is live in the US and will expand to other regions over time, and Shopify's ChatGPT channel requires your store to sell to US customers. ChatGPT can still mention and link to UK brands in ordinary answers, which is why crawler access and clear content matter now.

Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema.org markup needed for its AI features. Normal product structured data is still worth having for rich results and merchant listings, and Shopify themes include product schema by default. Check it is valid and that it matches the price and availability shown on the page.

Should I add an llms.txt file to my Shopify store?

It is optional. llms.txt is a community proposal rather than an official standard, and Google says it will neither help nor harm your visibility in Search. Spend the time on indexing, product data and content first.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?

Not in the organic results. OpenAI says product results are not ads and are not influenced by its partnerships. It is testing separate ad campaigns built from product feeds, in beta, and says those products will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations.
